I scored GA tickets for the first night of U2 in San Jose figuring the usual sound
configuration. Unfortunately U2 likes to run around so they build a new stage and
sound configuration. The stacks are mounted on the ceiling pointed towards the
sides. This meant pointing the mics straight up underneath one of the stacks which
is far from ideal. Seems best taping seats are front row upper deck. The result
of this wacky configuration is a muddy echoey sound. The one upside of this was
the area I stood was basically empty except for people going past me likes the tides
as Bono or the rest of the band played one end of the stage or the other. This means
minimal close crowd noise. The other issue was trying to stanf looking straight
forward without looking too obvious staring straight at a security guard with lots
of security walking past. I was not expecting a good recording but pleasantly
surprised with the listen on my drive home. Sound nothing like my Joshua Tree
recordings but will more than suffice as a reproduction of the show and the sound.
The show was a good mix of old and new and the band was having fun. They seem well
rehearsed and ready for a solid tour. Nice tribute to BB King. Looking forward to
night 2 where I have hopefully better taping seats.
